My nightstand is the old vanity (sans mirror) that was in my childhood bedroom

Getting into bed at night is truly one of my favorite parts of the day. I like to think I have many talents – actress, blogger, improviser, sketch comedy writer, great wife, amazing Maltipoo mother – but the thing I may be most gifted at is sleeping. Just ask my husband – no sooner does my head hit the pillow then I’m sawing logs – usually for a good eight or nine hours at a time. I’m not gonna brag and say I’ve slept for twelve straight hours but I’m not gonna say that I haven’t. I love to sleep.

A friend of mine works in a New Jersey household – the kind with cooks, and butlers, white linens and service with a capital S. She told me about their nightly bedtime ritual. After dinner the beds get turned down, a candle is lit, and vitamins and water are placed on the night stand. This sounded so lovely that I decided to create some bedtime rituals of my own.

– First, I make sure my feet are clean (no hippie feet in bed please!) then I slather on some thick lotion. I like L’Occitane Shea Butter, it’s expensive but a little goes a long way and a tin will last you forever. Then I put on a pair of fun cotton socks.
– Then I Meditate. Instead of watching another hour of boob tube I get comfy for ten minutes of me time.
– Before meditation I light my favorite candle which really sets the mood for a lovely slumber.
– I place a carafe of water next to my bed.
– Nothing sends me off like a few pages fiction, lately I’ve been reading Winesburg, Ohio.
– Lights out.

I’m all about creating fun, little rituals that make everyday life more enjoyable. If you have any I would love to hear about them in the comments below!
