I am of the old-fashioned opinion that Sunday dinners are for family, and while my extended clan is still back East, I love ending the weekend on a high note: dressed up and out on a date with my main squeeze.

Two Saturdays ago, we were invited by Innovative Restaurant Group to check out their new eatery, Riva Bella, on the edge of Beverly Hills. I don’t get to BH often, but I always enjoy it when I do. It’s like traveling to a super-polished version of L.A. in the ’80s—a world where things may be more expensive, but the service is better, the streets are wider, and Chanel is always appropriate. (I secretly love luxury, shhhh.)

I wore a vintage, silk Lily Pulitzer shift dress, because it was one of the first warm evenings in a while and color felt inevitable. My sister and I went through a phase where we collected vintage Lily, and this one is particularly festive: a Pop-Arty, multicolored heart print in a classic A-line shape that fit even better than I remember. This is one of those dresses that mysteriously ended up in my sister’s closet for many, many years and which she just now returned to me. It was like seeing an old friend and I instantly wanted to slip into it. The great thing about vintage is how it’s always appropriate: I felt comfortable and cute even though the crowd is a bit more mature. The fashion ranged from a sexy cougar killing it in a backless number with rhinestone detail along the trim—I love a bit of glamour on a Sunday, because it’s so unexpected—to jeans with heels and blazers. It’s not officially summer yet so I paired my frock with a fitted leather jacket and short Chelsea boots from one of my favorite online retailers, Need Supply Co.

The food was delish, and one of the major treats of the meal is the homemade ice-cream cart they wheel around and prepare tableside. Tableside cooking is one of my favorite near-lost arts, and I sincerely hope it’s making a comeback. The server preparing the dessert had an “Aww, shucks” quality that seemed fresh out of Pleasantville, and I couldn’t help wondering if he had been cast in the role of Ice Cream Delivery Man. I will definitely be back.
